A campus created from repurposed buildings on this Parkside block produced a new performance venue and facilities to offer education in musical theatre skills.
Red Mountain Theatre has completed its renovation of four adjoining buildings covering three quarters of a block in Birmingham’s Parkside district, near Railroad Park. Working as a consultant to the architect, the landscape architect provided the site plan, including off-street parking and drop-offs, the main entrance plaza, and detailed designs for the streetscapes.
The hardscape and planting for each of the four streets bounding the block were built to a different standard, to match the city’s guidelines for the district. Sidewalks are generally scored concrete with varying scoring patterns, with brick pavers concentrated at the corners. Three of the streets include bike lanes. Brick pavers are also used at the building’s main entrances, and commemorative engraved pavers featuring the names of alumni and supporters are integrated into the plazas.
Most of the off-street parking lot drains to a bioswale in the central island. Plantings are native or adapted types selected for their hardiness in stressful urban environments.
